Chapter VI: Fenrir’s Wolves
Synopsis: The Wolves of Fenrir
The group led by Thorlund advanced further and further towards the mountains of Gjallarhorn. However, before reaching Sigurd’s stronghold, they entered the deep, dark forests of Vetrskog, a place shrouded in legends. The air was heavy with the whisper of spirits and the howling of wolves echoing in the distance.
“I don’t like this place, ” Sigrún muttered, her gray eyes scanning the shadows. Eirik, with his typical tactlessness, replied, “Nothing on this road should please you, archer. But if wolves come, I’ll see to turning them into carpets.”
“These are no ordinary wolves, ” Bjorn interjected gravely, his hands firmly gripping his shield. Ivar, ever observant, added, “It’s not about strength here, berserker. This forest is alive in ways we cannot comprehend.”
Thorlund led the group with his Drengrsvard sword glowing faintly in his hands, as if responding to the approaching threat. “Whatever the test, we will face it together. But beware. This forest allows no mistakes.”
The First Confrontation:
The attack was sudden. From the shadows emerged the Garmar, Fenrir’s wolves. They were no ordinary wolves; their eyes glowed with an unearthly radiance and their bodies seemed to be reinforced by runes that pulsed as if pulsing with a life of their own. Each was larger than a man, and their movements were swift as the wind.
The leader of the Garmar, Skoll, emerged among them. He was a half-man, half-wolf creature with silver fur that reflected the dim light of the forest. His voice, low and deep, echoed in the warriors’ ears like thunder.
“This forest belongs to Fenrir. No mortal crosses it without our permission. Take one more step and you will pay for it in blood.”
Thorlund stepped forward, holding his sword firmly. “We do not come to destroy, but neither will we retreat. I seek the stronghold of Sigurd the Iron Skull. My cause is just, and my companions are not your enemies unless you choose them to be.”
Skoll growled, his claws scraping the ground as if he were about to pounce. “Prove your worth, human. If you survive the trial of the Garmar, you might live to continue your journey. But if you fall, your bones will feed this forest.”
The Trial of the Wolves
The wolves attacked with ferocity, and the group had to fight together to survive. Sigrún shot arrows from high in the trees, eliminating wolves before they got too close. Bjorn protected the group with his shield, deflecting the onslaught of the larger Garmar. Eirik, in his berserker frenzy, roared as he chopped with his axe, soaked in the blood of the fallen wolves. Ivar, cunning as ever, set improvised traps that slowed the enemies.
Thorlund engaged Skoll directly. The combat was fierce, a clash of fangs and steel. The Drengrsvard sword glowed brightly, cutting through the darkness of the forest. With each blow, the runes of the sword and Skoll’s seemed to resonate together, as if they shared a mystical bond.
The Unexpected Bond
Finally, Thorlund managed to subdue Skoll, placing the tip of Drengrsvard on his neck. But instead of delivering the final blow, Thorlund stepped back and reached out.
“A wolf recognizes a wolf, ” he said in a firm voice. “Join us. Together, we can overthrow the true enemy.”
Skoll, surprised by Thorlund’s nobility, stepped back and watched him carefully. After a few moments, he raised his head and howled skyward. One by one, the wolves stopped fighting, bowing their heads in respect.
“From now on, the Garmar will walk with you, Thorlund the Reborn, ” Skoll proclaimed. “You are worthy of Fenrir’s forest. Your cause is now ours.”
A New Power
With Fenrir’s wolves joining them, the group emerged from Vetrskog stronger than ever. Skoll and the Garmar were not only powerful allies, but also guides through the treacherous lands to Gjallarhorn. Thorlund felt that his destiny was closer, but he also knew that each step brought him closer to facing the real challenge.
