Synopsis: The Shadow Gate
The team enters the forest on a moonless night, following a barely visible trail that leads to the old convent. Each member senses the density in the air, as if the shadows themselves are watching them. As they proceed, Aldara senses a disturbing energy, a presence that seems to echo the girl’s warnings from the first chapter, “We all return to the same place…”
Upon arrival, they find the ruins of the convent, its structure eroded by time but still imposing. On the central altar, arcane inscriptions and dark symbols mark the stone, the same ones they have seen before. Liora notices a figure carved in relief: a circular portal surrounded by figures in agony, caught between two worlds. It is the “Shadow Gate.”
While examining the site, Nyra, who has a deep knowledge of ancient rituals, discovers a forgotten ritual in a manuscript. According to the text, the portal connects our world with a dimension where wandering spirits and damned souls wander restlessly. Those who attempted to cross this gateway in search of power were trapped, transformed into shadowy entities that now seek release.
The Ritual of Liberation: To close the portal and free the trapped souls, the team must perform the ritual at the altar itself. But as they recite the ancient words, the portal begins to react, vibrating and unleashing spectral shadows that swoop down upon them. Each is confronted by visions of those who were consumed by the “Shadow Gate,” and they must resist the temptation to cross it.
An unexpected twist: Just as they think they are succeeding in closing the portal, Noctus is struck by an invisible force that pulls him over the threshold. In a desperate attempt, Aldara holds him, but the pull is strong and his energy begins to diminish. At that moment, Liora discovers that the portal is not only a gateway to the afterlife, but a trap that, at every attempt at liberation, claims a living soul as its price. Noctus is on the verge of being consumed, and the team must decide: close the portal and sacrifice him or find another way to keep it sealed without human loss.
Final cliffhanger: With a last-ditch effort, Eryx and Nyra, combining their knowledge of sorcery and resistance, manage to stop the force trying to drag Noctus down. The portal closes momentarily, but not completely; it leaves a small crack, and through it, a familiar voice is heard. It’s the little girl from the first chapter, now clearer and more disturbing, whispering, “This isn’t over… We’re all going back to the same place… until someone stays.”
The team knows that even though they have closed the portal, the power of the “Shadow Gate” is still dormant, waiting for someone else to make the mistake of trying to open it.
