Grunge is a genre that emerged in the mid-1980s in Seattle, combining elements of punk rock and heavy metal. It is known for its distorted guitars, gritty vocals, and themes of alienation, frustration, and social criticism. The music often features a raw, unpolished sound, reflecting a rejection of the mainstream.

The genre was shaped by bands like Soundgarden, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains, who brought the Seattle music scene to global attention. Grunge’s fashion, marked by flannel shirts and a “slacker” look, also became part of its cultural impact.

In the early 1990s, grunge reached mainstream success, with Nirvana’s “Nevermind” album playing a pivotal role. Despite its commercial popularity, the genre maintained an anti-establishment attitude, influencing alternative rock for years to come.
