Chapter IX: The Altar of the Ring II
Synopsis: The Ring of Judgment
The moment Thorlund’s fingers brushed the enchanted ring, the world seemed to freeze. Every sound, every breath of wind, was engulfed by an unnatural silence. A shiver ran down his arm as an otherworldly voice whispered, not only in his ears, but deep in the recesses of his mind:
“Will you wield me or will I consume you as I have consumed countless others?”.
Thorlund’s companions stood transfixed, their faces tense with anticipation. Sigrún’s hand reached for her quiver, Bjorn raised his shield, and Eirik wielded his axe as if ready to strike down whatever arose. But it was Skoll’s unwavering gaze that most seared Thorlund, the wolf’s glowing amber eyes watching as if weighing the warrior’s very soul.
The test of will
The world dissolved into darkness. Thorlund was alone, standing in a void pierced only by the soft, haunting glow of the ring he now held in his hand. Voices echoed around him, whispers of power, temptation and despair:
“You have fought for this, you have bled for this, why do you hesitate? Take the strength you desire.”
A figure emerged from the darkness: a shadowy double of himself, his face twisted into a sneer.
“Who are you, Thorlund – a leader? A hero? Or just another fool drunk on tales of glory?”
The shadow lunged, Drengrsvard in hand, mirroring Thorlund’s weapon. Their blades clashed, and the void was filled with the deafening sound of metal clashing against metal. Each strike sent jolts of doubt into Thorlund’s mind:
“You will fail them.”
“You will lose everything.”
“You will die forgotten.”
But as the shadow raised the sword to strike a killing blow, Thorlund closed his eyes, remembering Helmara’s words, “True strength lies not in power, but in purpose.”
When he opened his eyes, his grip on Drengrsvard was firm. He met the shadow’s blow with unwavering determination, and shattered it into shards of light. The void crumbled, and Thorlund found himself back at the altar, the ring glowing softly in his palm.
The judgment of the ring
The voices faded, replaced by a single resonant tone:
“You have proved your will. But know that power without wisdom is destruction. Your journey has only just begun.”
The ring darkened and its once menacing presence faded.
The aftermath
Thorlund turned to his companions, with expressions of relief and wariness.
“Is it over?” asked Bjorn, his voice heavy with weariness.
“For now,” Thorlund replied, stuffing the ring into a bag. “But this is not a prize. It’s a burden… and a responsibility.”
Sigrún nodded, and her sharp eyes looked at the ring. “We should leave. This place… it looks like it’s watching us.”
Skoll growled under his breath, his hair standing on end. “The guardians have fallen, but the curse of this valley lingers. You have its heart now, Thorlund. Be careful.”
The group set off in retreat, with cautious but determined steps. As they left the altar behind, the cursed valley seemed to breathe a sigh of relief… or perhaps it was a warning, conveyed by the eerie stillness that enveloped them.
Harbinger of the final test
As they ascended the path out of the valley, Eirik broke the silence. “If the ring was guarded by such monsters, what is in store for us?”
Thorlund squeezed Drengrsvard tightly, his gaze fixed on the distant horizon. “Whatever it is, we will face it together.”
But deep in his heart, he knew that the real challenge was not a battle fought with steel and magic, but the battle within.
